Grow Spaces
Kratky in Apartments and Small Spaces
Kratky suits small homes well: no pump noise, no plumbing and nothing to drill. The challenges are light, space and keeping water where it belongs.

Why Kratky Works in Small Homes
A Kratky container has no moving parts, so it's silent and needs no outlet unless you add a light. It doesn't need a balcony, a yard or permission from a landlord. One shelf or one windowsill is enough to start.
Finding the Light
In most apartments light is the limit, not space. Look for your brightest window first. If you only have dim windows, a shelf with an LED grow light turns any corner into a grow space, including a closet or a spot far from a window.
Making the Most of Little Room
- Grow up, not out: a narrow shelving unit with a light on each shelf holds far more plants than a windowsill.
- Pick compact crops: herbs and loose-leaf lettuce give a lot of harvest for very little space.
- Harvest a few leaves at a time: picking the outer leaves keeps plants producing longer.
Containers for Small Spaces
Single mason jars work on a sill. On a shelf, small opaque tubs or storage boxes with holes cut in the lid hold several plants at once. Whatever you use, keep the solution dark to stop algae.
Spills, Pets and Neighbors
- Stand every container on a tray. Nutrient solution can stain wood and carpet.
- Keep containers out of reach of pets. Cats in particular like to drink from them and chew the leaves.
- Close any gaps around net cups so fruit flies and other pests can't get to the water.
Renting
Nothing in a Kratky setup needs to be fixed to a wall or plumbed in, so it all moves with you. If you add grow lights, freestanding shelves and clip-on lights avoid drilling.
