Kratky Off-Grid, Without Electricity
The Kratky method needs no pump and no power, which makes it one of the few hydroponic methods that works in a cabin, shed or anywhere off the grid.

Why Kratky Suits Off-Grid Growing
Most hydroponic systems rely on pumps or air stones running around the clock. Kratky doesn't: the plant's roots grow into an air gap that forms as the solution level drops. Once a container is set up, it needs nothing else for most leafy greens.
Light Without Power
Without electricity, daylight is your only light source, so it decides what and when you can grow. Use the sunniest windows, a porch that gets direct sun, or a simple outdoor setup in the warm months. Expect slower growth in winter.
Water
Use clean water to mix your solution. Rainwater and well water can both work. Well water can contain a lot of minerals, which affects how the nutrients behave, so it's worth testing it once if you can.
Nutrients and pH Without Gadgets
You don't need electronic meters. Measure nutrients with spoons or a small kitchen scale, following the product label, and check pH with test drops or strips. Mix the solution once at the start; most leafy greens can grow to harvest on that one fill.
Temperature Swings
Cabins and sheds can get very cold when nobody is there and hot in summer. Keep containers away from stoves and sunny walls, and don't leave them where they can freeze.
Leaving It Alone
One strength of Kratky off-grid is that containers can be left for days at a time. Before you leave, check the level is enough for how long you'll be away, and that lids and net cups are sealed against insects and animals.
