Close every opening to the water. Mosquitoes lay eggs on standing water, and a Kratky container is standing water, so snug net cups, sealed lids and fine mesh over any gaps stop them breeding there.
Where They Get In
- Gaps between the net cup and the lid
- Unused holes in the lid
- Loose or warped lids
- Saucers and trays that collect rainwater under the container
Sealing Up
Choose net cups that fit their holes tightly. Cover unused holes with tape. Where a gap can’t be closed, a piece of fine insect mesh held on with tape keeps mosquitoes out while letting air in.
Don’t Forget the Trays
Empty saucers and trays after rain. They breed mosquitoes just as well as the containers.
Check for Larvae
Lift a lid now and then and look for small wriggling larvae near the surface. If you find them, replace the solution and find the gap they came through.
Products
Some growers use mosquito dunks made for standing water. If you do, choose one labeled for use where plants are growing and follow the label.
